Riding with Santa

trip report

Wherever he shows up with his wild, white beard, Orbach is making an appearance. He was called ZZ Top, or a direct descendent of Durin, king of Dwarves. More often than not, he is called Santa.

Pretty much like Santa, Orbach travels a lot, albeit for very different reasons. His long standing passion is mountain biking on nice trails around the world. The list is rather impressive. Turkey, Croatia, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, to name a few. He just returned home from a bike trip in Japan when his friend David called and asked if he is keen on joining a mtb tour in Romania.

Orbach came to Romania five times already, but he needed little time to decide. A short conversation over the phone, luggage and plane tickets sorted, and we were right out on the bike trails.

Not knowing what to expect in terms of weather for the last week of October, we went for a flexible, custom six days program with trails of all types. We were blessed with some exquisite sunny days, allowing us to roam the mild, flowy, trails in the Saxon Villages near Viscri, the high altitude alpine trails in Bucegi Mountains, enjoy the spectacular vistas in the Piatra Craiului National Park or the juicy bike trails in Postăvaru Mountain and around Brașov city.

Sometimes surprised by the length and the intensity of our climbs, while sporting classical, non e-assisted bikes, David, Yarden and Orbach did put in a proper shift. Hats off to all of them for their capacity to get out of their confort zone. This is one of the main reasons we all like mountain biking, isn’t it?

I wasn’t sure what to expect, I just knew from various friends that a MTB trip in Romania is a must. So I found 2 friends and we hooked up with Horia especially because he mainly guides small groups so we had a personalized boutique tour at a reasonable price. He built us a great program, taking into account our abilities but still challenging enough so that we’d be sure our muscles ached at the end of the day. We rode through fantastic, lovely and varied landscapes, challenging (but not too dangerous) single tracks, and a few uphill that forced us to dismount and push.

Horia proved to be an extremely professional guide yet at the same time very friendly and courteous and also resourceful in solving all the problems that sometimes arise in MBT tours.

Thank you again Horia for an unforgettable MBT tour in lovely Romania!
