Kiwis in the Carpathians

trip report

"Your trip, a once in a lifetime adventure. Loved the riding, your country and your insights into the history of…"

Traveling all the way from New Zealand, Tom, Peter and Adam spent the first part of their mountain biking adventure in the Swiss and Italian Alps. It was Andrew’s idea, the fourth member of the party, to try something off the beaten track in the last part of their European holiday.

Hence the quite unusual sight of four kiwis riding their bikes on the Romanian mountain trails. Adding to the unusual element of the trip, it was the first time we combined regular, “unplugged” mountain bikes with an e-bike.

We had quite a long tour, based on the Carpathian Peaks program, with some amendments. We climbed peaks in Ciucaș, Piatra Mare, Bucegi and Cindrel. We rode the biking trails near Viscri, around the Fortified Churches in the land of Saxon Villages. We did the famous Strunga Pass descent, and tasted the juicy trails of Postăvaru and Piatra Craiului.

Fabulous days of sharing exquisite mtb trails, serious discussions and equally serious loughs (thanks, Jacinda). Good food, fresh drinks. Memories for a lifetime. And a remarkable selection of group photos, as you can see below:

Your trip, a once in a lifetime adventure. Loved the riding, your country and your insights into the history of Europe. Hope to talk a few more kiwis into coming riding with you. Well worth the journey.
