Carpathian Peaks is the latest addition to the list of programs here on mtbtours.ro and it is proving quite popular.
All my tours are perfectly defined by the UP. DOWN. REPEAT headline, but it is the Carpathian Peaks where the UP part is the most consistent, with many a steep, intensive climbs, including bike pushing and bike carrying. I had expected for this tour to attract more hard-core mountain bikers, like this gang from Scotland (see reports here and here). To my surprise, the concept of working your way up to a peak, enjoying the feat and the view, and biking down the trails afterwards, appealed to a wider spectrum of mountain bikers.
Sure, some will be able to bike up more than others. Some will resort to hike-a-bike sooner than others, and some will choose gnarlier lines on the descents than others. In the end, it doesn’t make for a big difference, if what you are after is to enjoy mountains in each and every of their aspects. Together with your friends or with like-minded companions.
Marcus, Nico, Florian and Tom wrote me about a mtb tour to Romania in the autumn of 2023, and we had plenty of time to discuss options and preferences, ending up with a custom program based on the Carpathian Peaks for the summer of 2024. Alternating some big mountain days with more relaxed rides, including some assisted uphill, we packed six days with some really exquisite mtb riding. Trails in Postăvaru, Ciucaș, Piatra Mare, Bucegi and Piatra Craiului were on the menu, and the four guys enjoyed them thoroughly. So much so as they are now prospecting a second coming on the Romanian mountain bike trails.
In the day and age of standardization, and mass production, going for a custom, tailor made mtb experience will come with great benefits, and the Carpathian Peaks tour is just perfect for that.
