Three days of all-mountain and freeride biking in Bucegi and Piatra Craiului with Sigge and Mike – a feast for the soul, for the eye, and also for the lens. I didn’t mind carrying an extra of almost two kilos of photo and video equipment, as my two riding buddies had plenty to show (off).
It was for the first time that my reliable old hard tail bike really felt kind of obsolete, seeing Sigge and Mike flying down the trails: as they liked to say, “You go first and we’ll wait for you at the bottom”. But hey, my old bike is still taking me to incredible places, no complaints there. And, as always, you can blame only so much the equipment. It’s also about the riders. And you can see some riders they were, if you move on to the photo gallery.
The Bucegi traverse is slowly becoming one of our favorite trails. Not very long, about 30 kilometers per day, but plenty of technical single trails. Quite a few trekkers on the section towards Omu peak, but no other bikers. From there on you enter no man’s land – you meet more shepherds than tourists. The long downhill from Strunga pass all the way to Bran is simply amazing, combining alpine rocky sections with forestry trails and then sections through wildflower fields where people were busy working the hay.
In the third, final day we rode in Piatra Craiului, seeing the Zarnesti Gorges and the meadows around La Table and Grind. After reaching Curmatura Groapelor for a thrilling panoramic view point over the entire Bran Country we moved towards Curmatura Hut: an exhausting uphill section payed a fair price for the final descent, back to Botorog. What a ride! We hope to see Sigge and more of his friends in the coming future on our trails.
