MTB on the Andros trails

I spend most of my time in or around the mountains. Even when going on a summer family holiday, usually driving South to the Greek coast, we end up in a very mountainous looking Aegean landscape. I routinely bring my mountain bike with me, but usually I don't get enough time and energy to do serious pedaling or trail riding, too busy baking in the hot sun or chilling in the turquoise waters. This time around I was able to do some proper recky in the island of Andros, home…

Going for the peaks

Starting with the 2021 season we are offering to our guests a new tour concept: Going for the peaks. Be it for a one-day ride, a weekend tour, a full-week program or a comprehensive ten-days adventure, the aim is to get up every day on a peak in the South-Transylvania Carpathian Mountains, and then bike all the way down to a cold beer, a nice meal and a good sleep. After a few good years of exploratory rides we proudly present a list of about 10 carefully selected peaks that…

The trails at Barcaciu

A tour that was in the planning for quite some time now finally happened on a perfect weather weekend of October 2019: the trails around Cabana Bârcaciu in Făgăraș, The Carpathian Mountains. We are usual guests at Cabana Bârcaciu, we go there often for our hiking, trekking, ski touring trips (more at www.mountainguide.ro). With bikes it is more difficult, as it is located at some distance from our home trails around Brasov city - which are pretty abundant. And it is strategically located at the end of a 5 km…

Up and down the Strunga Pass

In a very busy summer schedule we are now and then able to squeeze in a short tour that is part exploration, and part photo and video shooting opportunity. This July we went for a loop in the West side of the Bucegi Mountains for a true joy ride up and down the Strunga Pass. The Strunga Pass descent is one of the highlights of what Romania has to offer in terms of pure, natural trails that can be ridden on a mountain bike. What makes it special is a…

Hike a bike, or bike a hike?

We were mountain people before becoming mountain bikers. Being up on the trails is what we are after, and biking is just one of the ways to get up there. We don't mind if some push bike or carry bike comes in our way, when that is the price one must pay to reach some really special trails. Like the one coming down from Malaiesti mountain hut, up in Bucegi Mountains. A treat! It's a difficult trail, for advanced mountain bikers, and it is popular with hikers and trail runners.…

Moving pictures: single trail mtb in Piatra Craiului

We return with a video production after quite a long pause. We hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did while riding the trails of Piatra Craiului, filming and editing the piece. There is a quite simple reason why we lagged behind on the video production front: when you go filming, that's pretty much all you do. The fun factor of the biking is significantly limited, as riding is always interrupted. There is no flow. The backpack is heavier. Getting that big camera out for another shot, attaching the…

MTB in Romania, the French connection

It doesn't happen very often to have French guests in Romania, be it for hiking or mountain biking. We might share a common cultural background (the Latin heritage, the strong French cultural influences in last two centuries) but France seems to be a little too far away from Romania when travelling is the issue. We get significantly more calls from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, UK, Sweden than from France. Therefor we were pleasantly surprised when Jean sent us an email from Toulouse, inquiring about an advanced level mtb tour in…

Searching for the perfect trails

You know you've been blessed when... you live in a place like Brașov, a mountain biking paradise with great scenery, great mountains and plenty of trails, you have the chance to go biking with a group of Swedes which are both great company and a source of inspiration, you get ideal photo opportunities with bikers showing (off) their amazing skills, you are called to organize a seven-days mtb trip for these guys for the third year in a row. For all these reasons (and more) we do feel blessed. The…

Mtb in Saxon villages area, Transylvania

The blessing of being a mountain biker living in the city of Brașov comes with a price. Mind you, it’s a small one. With so many options of single trail riding in the neighbouring mountains (Postăvaru, Bucegi, Piatra Mare, Piatra Craiului, etc.) you don’t get too many incentives to travel further way looking for new mountain biking territories. Fortunately we still do that – you can read on this site stories about our mountain biking experiences in some Greek islands, on the Bulgarian seaside, but also in Romania, around Sibiu…

Cycling with our kids along river Olt

After one year of daily bike commuting to the kindergarten (apart from a few rainy days and a very short winter season) Alex is now ready for more consistent trips. Like the 20km trip along river Olt last weekend, together with our traditional partner in outdoor adventures, Rareș. We cycled on dirt roads close to the river, we had a small water crossing, a short pushbike, and some nice and quiet paved roads through little villages. All in all a very pleasant Sunday. We have planning to do for next…
